Description

The excellent point spread function and large field of the Euclid mission will revolutionize cosmology and cluster studies by enabling the detection of galaxy clusters via weak lensing shear, avoiding biases from indirect tracers like galaxies or the intracluster medium. This offers a view of the cluster population free of the biases that affect samples selected with those indirect tracers (e.g. Pacaud et al. 2007, Andreon et al. 2016, Orlowski-Scherer et al. 2021). The same data give us the holy grail of astrophysics, mass, for 35 thousand clusters (Andreon & Berge 2012).

This thesis focuses on studying the intracluster medium of shear-selected clusters in Euclid Data Release 1 in the footprints of ACT, SPT, and eROSITA surveys.  Using a hierarchical joint SZ/X-ray/shear analysis, this project will investigate both individual cluster properties (e.g., temperature, pressure, and mass profiles) and population-wide trends (e.g., diversity of cluster properties), addressing biases in traditional cluster samples.

With DR1 data collection complete and this project assigned to Brera by the Euclid consortium, we will scale SZ/X-ray/shear analysis methods using Big Data techniques developed at Brera (Castagna et al. 2022, 2024). This project ensures a strong scientific return on INAF’s investment in Euclid and paves the way for future surveys prioritizing weak lensing, such as LSST-Rubin and Roman.
