February 7, 2025 – Monthly meetings on violence and gender issues – First meeting with linguist and teacher Vera Gheno

The INAF Brera Astronomical Observatory is organizing a series of monthly meetings for the year 2025 on the topic of violence and gender issues in academic and non-academic settings, entitled: “When gender violence does not exist”.

Title of the first conference: “If you know how to see them: vicious and virtuous relationships between reality and language”

Speaker: Vera Gheno – Linguist and professor at the University of Florence. She mainly deals with digital communication and diversity, equity and inclusion.

Date and place: February 7, 2025 – 11:00 am – At our headquarters in Milan

Abstract: What is the relationship between language and reality? This is a question that does not have an immediately intuitive answer; when you start to think about the topic, a complex and fascinating picture emerges to analyze and try to understand. Overcoming the idea that language and reality are two contenders facing each other in the ring, implying that our attention can go exclusively towards one or the other, can be the beginning of a new way of conceiving the role of language in sociocultural changes.
