The INAF Brera Astronomical Observatory is organizing a series of monthly meetings for the year 2025 on the topic of violence and gender issues in the academic and non-academic fields, entitled: \u201cWhen gender violence does not exist: language, law, discrimination, evaluation, inside and outside the academy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second conference title<\/strong>: \u201cScientific excellence through the lens of inclusiveness\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaker<\/strong>: Silvia Penati \u2013 Full Professor of Theoretical Physics, at the Department of Physics of the University of Milan-Bicocca, very attentive to gender issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Date and place<\/strong>: March 7, 2025 \u2013 11:00 am \u2013 At our headquarters in Merate in Sala Belloni<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abstract<\/strong>: why is there a large gender gap in the scientific community, especially in STEM disciplines? Why does the percentage of women scientists decrease as one moves up in tenure? One of the main causes of this phenomenon is the presence of biases (prejudices?) in the evaluation criteria commonly used to define scientific excellence and select high-quality research. Overcoming or at least mitigating these biases is not easy and requires a long work of awareness and education on inclusiveness. The CoARA experience aims to be a first step in this direction, in an international dimension not only European.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
