{"id":11282,"date":"2026-08-25T12:34:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T10:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brera.inaf.it\/?p=11282"},"modified":"2026-08-25T12:38:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T10:38:02","slug":"milky-ways-fastest-star-orbits-our-supermassive-black-hole-so-closely-it-feels-its-spin-eso-press-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brera.inaf.it\/en\/milky-ways-fastest-star-orbits-our-supermassive-black-hole-so-closely-it-feels-its-spin-eso-press-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Neil Gehrels Swift satellite is leaving us after nearly 23 years of exciting discoveries."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">August 25, 2026 \u2013 Below are the words of our researcher Sergio Campana, PI of the Italian group and responsible for the calibration of the XRT telescope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After nearly 23 exciting years of great discoveries, &#8220;our&#8221;<br>satellite Swift is about to leave us.<br>Unfortunately, the mission that NASA had, in record time, approved,<br>designed, and launched (LINK, this is the name) has run out of fuel, and<br>therefore will not be able to attempt to return Swift to a higher orbit,<br>protected from friction with the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.<br>Here is one of the many news items<br><a href=\"https:\/\/heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/docs\/objects\/heapow\/heapow.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov\/docs\/objects\/heapow\/heapow.html<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have decided to resume Swift&#8217;s<br>observation activities for these last few months, albeit on a limited basis (at least initially),<br>so as to finish off its final days in glory, before its reentry into the<br>atmosphere, which will occur in the next 3-4 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swift was perhaps the observatory&#8217;s first major project,<br>led personally.
