Project: The balance of power: Is it stellar or AGN feedback to drive the Galactic outflow?
SHORT DESCRIPTION
Modern astronomy dictates the presence of a profound connection between the formation and growth of galaxies and the supermassive black holes at their centers, the so-called AGN feedback.
At the same time, it appears clear that there is a deep connection between star formation, which drives galactic winds, and the growth of galaxies, the so-called stellar feedback.
Although such interconnections must be present, it is not yet clear how such feedbacks operate to drive the growth of galaxies and other structures in the Universe.
With this project, we aim to understand whether stellar or AGN feedback are the dominant processes generating the Milky Way wind.
To improve our understanding of this phenomenon, we plan to analyze deep XMM and Chandra observations of the Milky Way disk, which we expect to provide information on the hot baryon streams emerging from the energetic activity of sources in the galactic disk, but also to detail their impact on the surrounding environment.
In particular, by linking these deep maps with the eROSITA all-sky maps, it will be possible to connect the sources present in the galactic disk with the corona, up to the circum-galactic medium.
We hope that this study will provide us with an archetype to advance our understanding of the theory of galactic evolution in a galaxy like the Milky Way.
ROLE OF THE OBSERVATORY
“The balance of power: Is it stellar or AGN feedback to drive the Galactic outflow?” study is part of the MUR project “FARE” (Framework per l’Attrazione e il Rafforzamento delle Eccellenze per la Ricerca Italiana) with our researcher Gabriele Ponti as Principal Investigator.
